Significance for civilization of such inventions as the sewer is difficult to overestimate. "Ancestors" of modern sewage pipes were made of wood. Certainly, to date none of these wooden sewer pipes "survived". But "primitive" copper drainage pipes survived. They have lain in the earth more than 4,5 thousand years. Engineers of Rome significantly improved the design of sewer. Romans knew the secret of casting sewer pipes. But this secret faded for a long time. Sometimes the sewer pipes were made in the form of a chute with soldered cover at the top. Bronze sewer pipes were most widespread in Rome . Thus, very long and branched pipes were produced. Romans actively employed both pipes for water supply and sewer pipes.
In the Middle Ages, sewer pipes were used a little, and their production went down again on a primitive level. A new breakthrough in the "pipe engineering" was introduced in the fifteenth century. It was cast iron pipe. That is cast iron "has overtaken" for four centuries steel in the production of pipelines. Cast iron was suitable for the production of reliable sewer pipes in all of its quality and parameters. One of the main areas of cast iron production was the use of it in domestic sewage pipes.
History of today demanded plastic pipes have less than a century. The raw materials for these systems were a well-known even then PVC. But PVC absolutely could not be used for heating and any "hot" pipeline. In the early 60's the market got pipes made of polyethylene. Polyethylene reinforced the belief that the future of the polymers will be great. Material favorably differed not only by the best thermal stability, but also by a number of other qualities. Combination of metal and plastic layers were successfully tested in similar pipes.
Polypropylene pipes are the latest and perhaps the best at the moment. There are no restrictions on the use of plastic. So, it is used for both potable water pipes and sewer pipes. Smooth inner surface prevents the pipe from all sorts of deposits and formations. They are guaranteed to last smoothly from 30 to 50 years, depending on the temperature of fluid in the pipes.
Of course there are a lot of varieties of existing pipes. The design idea is not standing still, and they are becoming more reliable and perfect. So there is no problem of choice. For some purposes it’s better to use a certain type of products. During the purchase of pipes the presence of certificate of vendors makes sense.
